How to Get Hair Like LC: Fun with a Flat Iron

Good Morning everyone! How are we doing today? Trick question to ya: what hairstyle does a straight hair girl crave for the most? Gimme an answer in 5 seconds, will ya? 5...4...3...2...1...done! The answer is wavy, curly hair! Although I can't speak for all the stick straight hair sistas out there, I myself is the textbook example for wanting what you don't have. My hair, as we all know, is really really straight. When I got a bit evil, I would go to the hair salon and asked for a shampoo and blow dry, emphasizing on "lots of volume". Then I would sit in the chair and see how the hair stylist suffer to create those volume that I want without using lots of products. Really, I can get evil sometimes. If you've heard or saw an MTV show called "The Hills", you know who Lauren Conrad or LC is. I don't watch her show but her hair is banging! She has curls that just flow effortlessly down her back. I sometimes ask myself how she got the look and the answer is "teamwork". However, the curls are really round and very voluminous. Unless you're a cheerleader or it's Halloween, I don't recommend walking 'round with that hair. Seriously, just don't! You'll end up scaring the children. </div> Then one day it dawned on me: why don't I try to get curls using a flat iron! I know, the greatest revelation to me, right? And an oxymoron as well: creating curls from a device that's used to straighten hair! I got a lucky break when I visited the House of Target and got an already cheap curling iron on sale. However, the curved plates and lightness of this product is very suitable to be used to curl hair. When you curl hair with a flat iron, the curls come out a bit longer and flatter which is the way I want it. The flat iron, however, is not as big and heavy, which makes the styling process much easier. Although not stated in the video, I think a heat protecting spray should be applied before using any heating tool. Also, using curling or flat iron often will damage your hair so I only do it once in a while. Recently, most blogs I read daily have this tag and at the end, the authors wrote these very dangerous lines: "I would have tagged everyone but seems like all of you have done it. But if you haven't, you'd better do it!" I could imagine these bloggers stare at me while they wrote those sentences. And as I was scared, I decided to comply (j/k! These ladies are so sweet and gorgeous, you know who you are;]) Here are the rules: 1. Link to the person who tagged you: I'm not gonna do that to protect <s>my own behind from being kicked</s> their identity. 2. Post the rules on your blog: done 3. Share six non-important things/habits/quirks about yourself: see below. 4. Tag six random people at the end of your post by linking to their blogs: not gonna do that either, everybody and their pets have done this tag a gazillion year ago! 5. Let each random person know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their website: it's free will, whoever haven't done this feel free to write about yourself. I'll read if you write ;) 6 Non-important things/habits/quirks about myself: 1. I write "y'all" when I'm happy Seriously, I don't try to sound hip or anything but ever since I moved down South, the "y'all" got into me. I don't say the word but only type it whenever I feel excited. So when you read my entries, especially the reviews, the number of "y'alls" probably is a good indication of how happy and excited I was when writing the post. 2. I'm a tea person I stopped drinking coffee for about 4 years ago because tea and cold water are as effective to keep me awake. My pantry currently has many boxes of tea and my current favorite is Darjeeling tea. 3. I used to have 6 email addresses at one time Once upon a time, I got a bit too excited about getting my own emails and signed up for 6 different email addresses. I think 3 of them were from Yahoo!, 1 from Hotmail, 1 from Opera Mail, and 1 from iVillage (pre-blogging time, now I don't know if iVillage offers email accounts anymore!) How I managed them was another story and some of them ended up collecting spams. Now I have much less email accounts to maintain and life is much simpler that way. 4. I love YouTube! In fact, I learn how to do my makeup and cook food from different cultures by watching YouTube videos. Also, I find hair tutorials are interesting but I don't do hair that well. 5. I learn how to dance by watching Ellen Before Ellen season 2, I did not know how to dance. This is for real, y'all! You could not crack a move out of me as I was as stiff as a board. Then one day I watched Ellen and saw how she danced. I just copied her moves and found it very fun to dance. I'm not exactly Beyonce when I dance but at least now I can move from left to right without feeling awkward. 6. I actually don't enjoy writing at all... ...but once I started, I found joy in it! So I opened up this blog and in a whim joined NaNo. Right now I'm determined to make daily writing a habit and hopefully it will stick with me. As they said, "The only way to learn how to write is to start writing", I'm learning it the one and only way. That's it, my six quirky things. If you haven't done this tag, please do so! Archetype Cosmetics Pigments: Part 2

Good Morning ladies, Rise and shine and makeup! How are we doing today? I'm currently adapting my life around this madness that I voluntarily involved called NaNoWriMo. So far so good and I'm doing my very best to update my blog as planned. Today's post is the follow up of <a href="http://mymakeupblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/archetype-cosmetics-pigments-part-1.html">last night's post</a> as I reviewed some pigments from Archetype Cosmetics that I purchased a while ago. These pigments are really gorgeous and interesting to use that I have to post about them. Although I do not like this company's turnaround time, the pigments speak for themselves and in the end they win. The colors posted today are more of purple and dark shades that are very "in" during the fall and winter months. If you look closely, purples are really popular this season and myself being a trend predictor, picked these colors about a month before we see purple all over the place. 1. It is more of a lighter lotus pink color with a lot of frosty pigment. It almost looks like white in the swatch and in fact is a very difficult color to photograph due to its frosty nature.</li><li>Burlesque Revival is a pinkish gray that reminds me of the colors on some pigeons. This color looks very innocent and makes a good middle color for the smokey eyes look.</li><li>Spring Lunacy is a light frosty purple shade that is breathtakingly gorgeous.</li><li>St. Elmo's Fire is another color shifting shade: although it looks like a grayish purple eyeshadow, the green underlying pigments are really strong.</li><li>Madame Teprsichore and St. Elmo's Fire look similar to each other. However, once applied Madame becomes a darker grayish purple that is very shimmery.</li><li>Exquisite Corpse is a true mid-purple color with a lot of shimmer. It is a very MAC-like shade in my opinion.</li><li>Katerina reminds me a lot of the Russian winter. It brings a wave of chill with it and feels very glittery. Also a very MAC-like color (but MAC has nothing like it!)</li></ul></div></div> 2. This color is so blinging and fabulous that I think I can survive this summer looking pretty.</li><li>Unseelie Court is a dark reddish purple shade with less shimmer than Styx and Katerina. It is more wearable that way and I've been using it a lot.</li><li>Kitsune Yokai is a color shifting eyeshadow. I can't find a good way to describe it because this color is very complex. You've gotta check it out for yourself as it's one fantastic eyeshadow.</li><li>The Black Dahlia is not black but dark purple. It's dark and mysterious like the name implied, a good color to use as a liner.</li><li>Erotic Underground is another shape shifter. It is dark purple-gray with green and gray frosty pigment. This color is very complex and interesting.</li><li>Epiphany is a shimmering dark grayish purple color that is good for the outter-v area. I was curious to see how an epiphany looks like as I'm going through one myself. However, I noticed the color shifted to frosty purple when I took the swatch picture. That was something very unexpected to me.</li><li>Burning Water: I must confess I was curious to see how Burning Water look like (Is there anything called "burning water" btw?) This color looks like a regular "dark grey with shimmer" eyeshadow but once swatched, it changed to a frosty grey. I didn't see that coming either!</li><li>Ornaments of Gold is awfully familiar! The moment I saw it, I jumped with joy: it's a twin of <a href="http://mymakeupblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/mac-solar-bits-intrigue-experience.html">MAC Solar Bits</a> in Black Ore! The black and gold are the same, except Ornaments of Gold is finer in texture and much more affordable. This obviously my most favorite color of the bunch.</li><li>Red Death is a mixture of black and red micas that almost look like deep maroon to me. This color is also an interesting liner color.</li><li>Deep Sunless Sea has a bit of dark blue, white, and gold micas in black pigments. It is gorgeous without being over the top.</li></ul></div></div></div><div style="text-align: left;">The Art of Contrast Since I got all these very shimmery colors from Archetype Cosmetics, I found makeup to be more interesting than ever. While Archetype pigments are flashy, Adorned with Grace ones are more matte or velvet in texture. By pairing matte with shimmers/frosts, I contrasted their nature and in return, my eyes have more depth. I highly recommend y'all trying this trick and I'll probably end up doing a FOTD just to prove the point :) *Stuff in my agenda so far: 1. Contouring tutorial, 2. Foiling tutorial, and 3. Eyeshadow contrast tutorial. Once I get into the motion of November, I promise to post each of them per week. Archetype Cosmetics Pigments: Part 1

Hello again my lovelies, I'm back with another post for the day and hope you enjoyed the discount codes I posted up earlier today. Apparently, there is a thing called "having too much fun" and right now I am happy with pounding my little fingers on my keyboard. I hope not to see this coming but for the first time ever, I'm behind in blogging. But don't fret, a lot of hot tea will fix the problem :) Before I go on about this review, I meant to post this up a while ago already but for various reasons, this post almost did not happen. About 3 months ago, I placed an order at <a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.archetypecosmetics.com">Archetype Cosmetics website</a>. If you haven't heard of this company, Archetype currently sells their pigment samples for 25 cents a piece. No, it's not a typo either, I got it after almost 2 months. In the past when I did the Mineral Makeup Week, I complained about the turnaround time at The She Space (3 weeks). Now Archetype tops that list and I think I owe TSS an apology for wrongly accusing them of being slow. I ordered 27 pigment samples and got to choose 3 samples for free. With shipping, the order totaled at $9 USD! For 9 dollars, I may get 2 or 3 things from other companies. I may even get a few samples from Aromaleigh with that amount of money. However, when the order finally arrived, I actually received 41 samples, wowza! (Actually 2 samples are in the same color but I don't mind it at all!) The owner of Archetype, Holy Reagan, has a full-time job and only fills order during her free time. Moreover, with that price tag I can imagine a lot of people flocking in for the samples. So my only advice to you if you decide to order from Archetype Cosmetics is be patient, 2 months is not that bad when the pigments are out-of-this-world beautiful. Enough of the chit-chat already, let's get some swatches on, shall we? Since I have a lot of samples, I decided to spit into two posts to give a better review. Today's post is covering the lighter colors whereas tomorrow's covering darker and fall colors. 1. While some of the colors are as-is, most will change in different light settings which make them very interesting to use. Texture-wise, these pigments are loose and a tad chunky for mineral pigments. They feel almost the same as MAC's latest pigment collection "Overrich", whose pigments are finer than the regular MAC pigments. <ul><li>Queen of the Nile is a golden shade of pigment that is very luxurious. This pigment is highly shimmering but does not color-shift.</li><li>Child of Hounds has more orange pigments than Queen of the Nile and does not shift in colors either. I think it is similar to one of the golds in "Overrich".</li><li>Autumn Leaves is an interesting gold color as it has overlaying green pigments. The green is very profound under the light.</li><li>Yowie the Night Beast is a frosty orange color that is very beautiful and wearable. If you are looking for a nice-looking orange, this is the color for you.</li><li>Mausie looks exactly like Yowie in the bag. However when I swatched it, the copper pigments came out and you can see the coppery-orange shade much better in this swatch.</li><li>Verre de Soie is absolutely gorgeous, oh my! It appears snow white in the bag but under different lightning this color looks different: purplish white, pinkish white, and even grayish white. This color is the best highlighting eyeshadow I've ever seen and I consider getting a full-size jar when my sample runs out.</li></ul>2. Moreover, I did not think green would look good on me either. And I stuck to my plan and regretted it because these colors turned out to be very beautiful. <ul><li>Old Ecru is a forrest green shade that has a lot of sparks in it. "Ecru" is the original color of fabric, I found the meaning in the dictionary.</li><li>Cicatrix looks exactly like Old Ecru when it's in the bag. However, it is a color shifter and the brown pigments shines in the swatch picture.</li><li>Midnight Aeval is very pretty: it probably is the darker cousin of MAC Parrot if the later one ever had a cousin. I describe it as a dark peacock greenish blue and I can imagine myself using it for special occasions.</li><li>The Gargoyle Tree is darker than Midnight Aeval and has a touch of grey in it. Where Midnight Aeval is reserved for events, this color is more for daily use. Both of these colors are really gorgeous and unusual.</li><li>Twilight Aeval is a part of the trio including Midnight Aeval, Twilight Aeval, and Daybreak Aeval. It is a light peacock blue which is very glamorous but also wearable.</li><li>St. Alia-of-the Knife is a very beautiful frosty blue. It is a tiny bit darker than Twilight Aeval and also very pretty.</li></ul>3. This is a part of the Aeval trio and is a light and frosty foam green.</li><li>Lilith's Daughter is an interesting color that is very hard to describe: it has brown, red, and tiny bit of black pigments mixing together. It looks brown in this swatch but appears red in some occasions. Another interesting color shifter to enjoy!</li><li>Dead Rose is a dark bloody red pigment and so far I haven't used it yet as the color is so interesting!</li><li>Integra's Dog I: the first of the two dogs. Dog I is a brighter red than Dog II and I intend to use this color as a lip shade as it is lip safe. A very sanguine color for those who seeks this kind of thing.</li><li>Plastic Pink is just what its title implied: plastic, bubble gum, Barbie pink. Bright, cheery, shimmery, girly are adjectives to describe this color.</li><li> Spun Sugar is a lot understated than the rest of the colors. It is similar to Hard Candy Taffy but has more shimmer. This color obviously is for the all over the lid application but can also be used as a highlighting shade.</li><li>Lolita's Lollipop is a lighter pink than Spun Sugar but has a lot of shine. It is a true duochrome color and good as a highlighter.</li></ul>I find Archetype Cosmetics pigments to be very fun and creative. However, the adherence is not too strong so I always use a layer of MAC paint pot as my eyeshadow primer. Archetype has a lot of pigments, more than 200 of them if I recall correctly so there's something for everyone. Welcome Home, November!

Well hello there gorgeous! Happy Monday and can't you believe it, we're in November! For some unknown reasons, I find November very exciting and hopefully the blog is the reflection of my feelings as well. This month is going to be a busy one for me, as it always is in November. During last weekend, I mapped out what I want to blog about and let me just say that I'm quite happy about this. Also, this month marks the start of our 5th month ever since I started blogging here. Time flies so fast, isnt' it? I am really thankful for every single one of you who have been coming here to read my blog. I just want to let you know all your comments, feedback, and readership are very appreciated. During the weekend, I made a new banner for November and it's pink! Also, if you look closely, you will see the lyrics of "November Rain" embedded. Neat, huh? It took me a while to come up with something I feel good about and I hope you love the November banner as much as I do. I don't know how the stars align this month but I have a lot to write. Beside the writing for school and blogging her, yours truly decided to join <a href="http://www.nanowrimo.org/">NaNoWriMo</a> at the last minute! If you haven't heard of this organization, the National Novel Writing Month is held annually in November online for amateur and professional writers to write their novels. The goal is to complete at least 50,000 words during this busiest month of the year. I first joined NaNo in 2004 but did not finish the novel because I ran out of idea after word 2000! Then in 2006 I managed to string words together to finish the challenge but it was a crappy piece of word that I think I already deleted from my hard drive. This year I compulsively joined NaNo again to challenge myself to write. Writing probably is a challenge for me and at this point in my life, I need to put myself in a habit of writing everyday, rain or shine. Also, if you want to learn how to write, the only way to learn is to write. Obviously, there is no short cut for that. I am working word by word toward that 50,000 mark and hopefully a soon-to-be New York Times best seller is forming from me pounding on the keyboard. Her questions prompted me to write a post about this topic. (And you thought I was just going to wish you a good month, don't you?) So Annie and everyone, please click "Read More" to know my take on this "controversial" subject (just kiddin'!) Annie wrote: <blockquote>As a newbie to makeup, is it better to have loose pigments? How do you use them, with a wet brush? Does that make blending harder? I am just wondering about this loose pigment craze. I just stick to the pressed shadows b/c that's what I know. maybe you could help me out. :)</blockquote>Dear Annie, First of all, I would like to thank you for asking me these questions. The pigments vs. pressed shadows has been a debatable subject since the existence of both subjects. Like everybody else, I was introduced to makeup by using pressed or pan shadows. It was until about a year ago that I started using loose pigments and I felt hard and fast for it. Although pigments was available from MAC and other theatre makeup companies, it was the rise of mineral makeup that brought this form of eye shadows to its popularity. So let me answer your questions one by one: 1. Is it better for a beginner to use loose pigments? The answer is "It depends" (how politically-correct of me!) Since I had my feet wet with regular pan shadows, I find loose pigments a lot of fun to use and a bit easier to control in the amount of product to apply. Also, loose pigments are really versatile and can be used almost anywhere you want: face, eyes, lips, body,... 2. Does it make blending harder? Au contraire, blending with pigments is quite easy. I highly recommend it for my<a href="http://mymakeupblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/tutorial-will-real-smokey-eyes-please.html"> smokey eyes look</a> because I can get the look faster than using regular eyeshadow. Also, my blending brush is awesome, which makes blending easier. 3. Wet or dry application? As I mentioned earlier, pigments are very versatile to use: you can apply it dry or wet. The wet application is called "foiling" when you use mineral pigments as the dried pigments look like tin (aluminum) foil. Until a month ago, I did not get the foiling technique and only used it dry but foiling really makes the color more intense and interesting to look. However, I use dry pigments when I do the smokey eyes. Although people like to blend wet pigments together, I find the result quite muddy and do not recommend it. However, you can foil one color, let it dry and blend with a layer of dry pigments. The result is very stunning! I meant to do a foiling tutorial forever but when I got to do it, the pictures did not come out nicely but I am sure it is in my agenda. The only complain I have on pigments is the messiness. Since most mineral makeup companies are selling their pigments in jars with shifters these days, the risk of spilling is less. However, I once spilled a copious amount of a custom-made color from a non-shifter 3-gram jar and regretted it. Also, the fall out when applying pigments is higher than that of regular eyeshadow. I always apply a layer of loose powder on the area underneath my eyes and brush it away after I'm done applying my eye colors. If you choose to use pigments, I suggest you to get a good eyeshadow primer. Since most pigments do not have any chemicals to adhere to your skin, the primer is a layer that holds the pigments together. I use <a href="http://mymakeupblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/mac-paint-pots-my-pride-and-joy.html">MAC paint pots</a> and they work very swell for me. MAC shadesticks as well as Urban Decay Primer Potion (UDPP) are good candidates as well. So when you are ready, I find NYX Ultra Pearl Mania to be a good and affordable pigment solution. Also Adorned with Grace and Silk Naturals have really nice pigments. I am going to post some swatches of pigments from another company during this week so y'all stay tune, ok?
