A pat on your shoulder just for you. I like the word "fierce" even way before Christian Siriano made it sound cool. How fierce is that? The teddy bear is his collaboration with the famous German t-bear producer Steiff. If you watch Antique Roadshow as religious as I am, you know an antique Steiff plushie does not come cheap. So Unkle Karl beary counter part does not come cheap: only 2500 of these guys will be sold and each will <s>rob</s> cost you $1,500 USD. It's does not cost much to own an alpaca teddy bear that resembles the greatest desginer of the 20th century, does it? Plus, the bear wears everything that Unkle Karl does, from the sunglasses to the leather pants. The Story of my Blog Layout

Since I <a href="http://mymakeupblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/quick-guide-to-my-makeup-blog-20.html">changed my blog layout</a> from Blogger's free 2-column template to the current 3-column template, I was asked of how I got the template and all the details related to it. Well, I'm not a person who likes to keep secrets to herself, and life is too short to keep them anyways, so I'm going to let you know about a mayjah website, ok?<br /><br />Ready? It's <a href="http://www.ourblogtemplates.com/">Our Blogger Templates</a>, a website that provides high-quality and <span style="font-style: italic;">free</span> templates for Blogger users (did I mentioned free?). I know there are so many websites out there that do the same thing. However, I've never seen any that gives such polished and customizable blog layouts like OBT. Before changing to the current layout, I wanted a 3-column template really really badly. However, if you're reading my blog right now, does it look black-and-white to you?And I also bet you doubt if it's really Brooklyn at all! That's how much customizable this OBT template is: it allows me to stretch my creativity and the result is one colorful blog of mine :)<br /><br />So the transformation went like this:<br /><ul><li>I found a blog banner and customized it (that was not simple, I spent a lot of time find the one!)</li><li>Then I installed Brooklyn template...</li><li>...and spent about 1/2 day customized the fonts, colors, etc...</li><li>Finally came the widgets and I was done!<br /></li></ul>The whole process took me about 2 days because I know zip about HTML and web designing. Also, i do not enjoy the idea of just slapping a pre-desinged template to my blog as I do not want it to look like the one I stumbled into. Blogs are your own selves projected online, you definitely do not want to look like the one who sits next to you. Moreover, if I can do it, you can too! So if you're thinking of doing a blog facelift, head straight to Our Blogger Templates and find a layout that suits your taste. The Wonderful Egg Masques

I'm a fan of eggs: they are yummy, easy to cook, and also good for your skin. The first thing I learned how to cook was a hard-boiled egg when I was in 1st grade. Then I got promoted to cooking sunny-side-up and omelets. My most recent egg dish is steamed eggs which I eat with rice and steamed veggies. Today I would like to share with you 3 egg masques that I use: one to tighten and tone, one to treat acne inflammation, and one to lighten your skin.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">The first wonderful egg masque:</span> <span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">egg white masque</span><br /><br />This is a masque that will tighten your skin. I call it "face lift in an egg" as it will give you a temporary glow and tightening look. Although all can benefit from this masque, those with oily skin will reaps more benefit since this masque is quite mattifying.<br /><ul><li>Separate the egg white from egg yolk, keep the yolk for further use. Beat the white until frothy.</li><li>Apply it to your clean face and let it stay for 15-20 minutes. You will feel your face tighten up during the process.</li><li>Wash your face with warm water. You will see your face glowing after washing. This masque will give you a temporary face lift for about an hour. You should use that time wisely to put your best face forward :D</li></ul><br /><span id="fullpost"><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Second wonderful egg masque:</span> <span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">egg yolk masque</span><br /><br />Did you remember to keep the yolk from the first masque recipe? If you forgot (or ate the yolk already), just go ahead a crack another egg. This time we're using the yolk and please keep the white for the last recipe. When I came to grad school, the stress of moving and adapting to a new environment took a toll on my face. The school's monthly magazine had a beauty section where people sent in their home remedies and such. One girl wrote that her dad told her to use eggs on her face to treat acne. It makes sense to me as the egg yolk is full of vitamin A, or retinol as the molecule is called. We all know, retinol and its retinoid derivatives are used as acne treatment and anti-wrinkle compounds. In fact, retinol is a molecule that works in skin care. Moreover, the egg yolk has high concentration of cholesterol and fatty compounds, which makes it suitable for dry skin that needs moisture.<br /><br />How to do it:<br /><ul><li>Beat an egg yolk lightly with a fork (or chopsticks for Asian folks), then add about 1 teaspoon of honey.</li><li>On your clean face, apply the egg and honey mixture. You should lay down and relax during the time the masque is applied as egg yolks do not dry out as fast as egg whites.</li><li>After 15-20 minutes, wash your face with warm water. You can use this masque as many times as you want as it is a very cheap and effective way to treat acne.</li></ul><span style="font-weight: bold;">Third wonderful egg masque:</span> <span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">egg white with lemon</span><br /><br />I find this masque to be a useful means to lighten up the complexion. For those who have sensitive skin, you should use this masque sparingly or avoid using it all together. Lemon is used to really cleans the pores but it also makes your skin more vulnerable to the sun. Therefore, copious amount of sunscreen is needed after using the masque.<br /><br />How to do it:<br /><ul><li>Beat an egg white with some drops of lemon like you did in masque #1.</li><li>Apply the mixture to your clean face for 15-20 minutes and wash it with warm water when you're done.<br /></li></ul>That's it, I gave you the triple thread of egg masques. I really love applying these masques and hope you will enjoy them as well. DYI skincare is great as it does not contain harmful ingredients. Also, these masques are easy and affordable. To Detox or Not to Detox, That Is a Question

I think I'm getting a little bit dramatic today, channeling Hamlet and all! A wee bit ago, my friend Van asked me about detox and since I was not clear of what kind of detox she asked, I tracked her down and she told me she wanted to know more about the whole body detox. Now, here's the thing, I have either the honorable tittle of "M.D" or "Ph.D" attach to my name so far (but I may get the later one some day!) Therefore, I'm not legitimate to give any of you health-related advice. However, I do have my own detox experience and if you want to know about it, please feel free to join. So this blog entry is a bit different as I'm not giving you any advice, I'm just basically sharing my own personal thoughts about the whole detox process. I just want to make sure you understand this point so nobody is will sue me for advising without a license. According to <a href="http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/detoxify">The American Heritage Medical Dictionary</a>, detoxify is defined as:<br /><br /><div class="ds-list"><b></b></div><blockquote><div class="ds-list"><b>1. </b> To counteract or destroy the toxic properties of a substance.</div><div class="ds-list"><b>2. </b> To remove the effects of poison from something, such as the blood.</div><div class="ds-list"><b>3. </b> To treat a person for alcohol or drug dependence, usually under a medically supervised program designed to rid the body of intoxicating or addictive substances.</div></blockquote><div class="ds-list">For my master's thesis, I've got to see first hand the environmental effects of toxic compounds on human health and it's not pretty. Nowadays, environmental advocate groups denounces a lot of compounds that deems to be toxic to human beings and some of them can be found in beauty products (phthalates, sulfates, toluene in nail polish, and parabens.) Some research shows that we spend about 60-90% of our daily activities indoors and can get exposure to various chemicals through indoor exposure. Sounds interesting/tiring/mind-numbing? Well, it's a part of my thesis, people!<br /><br />So really, the thread of indoor exposure is real. However, more research of effects of toxic compounds on human needed to be performed -> sounds exactly like a line of everybody's research papers these days. I don't want to poke fun at folks but the last point is serious: more research needs to be done! Environmental advocate groups are really quick to denounce these compounds based on some research done in rats with high concentration of chemicals induced to the poor rats' bodies. And just to be clear, rats and humans are not the same. So yeah, <span style="font-style: italic;">more research needs to be done!</span><br /><br />Ok, let's go back to our agenda shall we? About 2 years ago, I started detoxing here and there. Living in this town brought a total lifestyle change to me. It also brought a lot of new perspectives to my life and I do appreciate it. This town is really green and healthy. Also, there's a health food store called <a href="http://www.newleafmarket.coop/">New Leaf Market</a> that sells all sort of things. It also has free magazines with nice recipes and updates to vitamins and new health trends. In short, the town is kind of indie. From New Leaf, I knew a bit of detox and during the same time, my face broke out really badly. Of course, the stress of moving to a new environment took a toll on me. Plus, my diet that consisted of ramen noodles and canned tuna was not the most stellar one either. One advantage of detoxing is having a clearer complexion and I do agree with that. However, the time I detoxed was probably one of the worst time I felt.<br /><br />The first detox I did was with pills: I bought a pack of a seven day detox plan. It was simple: take pill(s) at the A.M and P.M for a week straight and I would feel better. But before I felt better, I felt worse: lethargic, cranky, moody, and headache-y. After that one week, I slowly went back to my usual self and my skin cleared up significantly. I used the same plan twice until a New Leaf employee told me that detoxing was not supposed to give me a headache. She also pointed a different product to me and that was a two-week plan package. The later one gave me a much better experience. And my skin also cleared up.<br /><br />So why did I stop detoxing myself?<br /><br />First of all, the whole detoxing process is nothing but fun: the plan is complicated, I felt lethargic and cranky, and worse of all, I went to the bathroom for number 2 many times a day (and night as well!) As you would notice, some of the ingredients are diuretic and make you go to the bathroom a lot. So after you detox, you feel lighter because you lost a lot of fecal matters. However, if you eat enough fibers and your digestive system functions well, you do not have any problems going to the bathroom doing number 2. So really, those detox plans do not perform anything your body can't naturally do.<br /><br />How about the clearer complexion? During the process, to combat lethargy I drank a lot of water, more water than I usually took during that time. And we all know water hydrates cells which leads to less inflammation (at least that was what Dr. Perricone said!) Also, during the detox process, I had a much better diet so it might be a cumulative effect.<br /><br />But needless to say, I stopped detoxing more than a year ago already. Nowadays, I improve my quality of living by eating a better diet that composes of less animal proteins (a fancy way of saying I'm some sort of a vegetarian, yo!) My skin does look and feel better without the meat but for the sake of having enough nutrients, I incorporate some fish to the diet. I do not drink milk because of the hormones in milk. Soy milk is more of my type although soy yogurt tastes awful!<br /><br />For those of you who are still reading, here are the changes I made (and would like to make) to improve my health and my skin:<br /><br /><ul><li>Eating a more sensible diet with less animal proteins: it's actually good for the environment since livestock contributes methane, a green house gas, to the atmosphere. Also, the energy cost to raise a pound of meat is much higher than that to grow a pound of beans.</li><li>Eating more fruits and veggies: it comes as phases, sometimes I'm a fruit/veggie fanatic, sometimes I'm not. But I make sure I sneak some of them in my main courses.</li><li>Take care of my skin by using less abrasive products and mineral makeup.</li><li>Exercise more: it's still in my work-in-progress list and I know I need to exercise, stat!</li><li>Drink water: dehydration is a sneaky bastard, it can damage your body more than you can imagine. New Mineral Makeup Company: Adorned with Grace Minerals

Mineral makeup (MMU) companies grow like mushrooms these days. Just google "mineral makeup" and you will get <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=mineral+makeup&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=">more than 2 million hits</a>! That shows how popular this type of makeup is these days. I've been following Franchesca Jones's journey to opening her own MMU business called <a href="http://www.adornedwithgrace.com/">Adorned with Grace</a>. About a year ago, Franchesca opened a Yahoo! Group to ask people to test out her products before launching her own e-business. Before joining her group, I already used MMU from Everyday Minerals but wanted to see what the creative process of the mineral business is. However, I joined the group at the very end of the testing time and did not get any samples. I kept on wondering how she was doing and when her store would opened. And guess what, on the morning I thought about it, I received an email from her saying her store just opened! How wonderful was that? Her foundations are classified in different groups of yellow, golden, olive, and peach undertones. I found her approach unique as most mineral companies do not take time to distinguish these groups. Let's face it, most Asians are not just yellow or golden, we have at least one of those other undertones that make foundation matching so difficult. How often do you receive makeup in an airtight sealed bag huh? The samples are really tiny and I have to admit I'm a little bit spoiled, plus after running around under the hot sun I was a bit cranky as well. The bag is the same size as the one that came with the extra button when you purchase your clothes. It's very very tiny, which prompted me to think she must be crazy to sell a dollar a sample!<br /><br />But is it so? No commercial break, I just copied Conan O'Brien there.<br /><br />The truth is Adorned with Grace's colors are really pigmented. I simply used very little bits of pigments on my eyes. The eyeshadows she sent me are mostly neutrals and out of the bat, neutrals look really really boring. However, when I used them on my eyes, they started to look more and more interesting and I completely changed my opinion about them. Now, most companies that do bright colors tend not to do neutrals really well. It's a bit difficult for me to find a brand that has highly pigmented colors that are not too sparkly. Franchesca does neutrals extremely well and the colors she sent me reminds me a lot of Bobbi Brown eyeshadows: classy, pigmented, and very work-appropriate. This color is a bit frosty but not too sparkly at all. In the bag it looks matte but applying on my skin proved otherwise.</span></li><li><span id="fullpost">Devoted looks like a purplish-brown color on my skin. It's a perfect contouring color for those who want an extra bit of oomp in your makeup. It's sparklier than Extraordinary but again, none of the samples are in that discoball level of sparkle.</span></li><li><span id="fullpost">Noble is my favorite color out of the batch: it looks like mink and is very velvety to apply. I love it as an eyelid color and it's very work-appropriate chic.</span></li><li><span id="fullpost">Trustworthy is a pink-brown color that's perfect as a fleshtone eyeshadow. If you're in a hurry, you can swipe it all over your eyelids, apply some mascara and lipgloss and you're done.</span></li><li><span id="fullpost">Brilliant is a highlighting color which reminds me a lot of MAC Shroom. The texture is the same as velvet eyeshadows from The She Space.</span></li></ul><span id="fullpost">These colors are really gorgeous and also Franchesca's favorites. Noble is no doubt my most favorite shade out of the batch. I think this color is a hit for those of you who wants to have a healthy flush on your cheeks.</span></li><li><span id="fullpost">Affectionate is the color that I'm drawn to the most as it's a very gorgeous pink color. It's part NARS Orgasm, part MAC Dollymix, that's how I can describe this color.</span></li></ul><span id="fullpost">Like the eyeshadows, Adorned with Grace blushes are really really pigmented. As much as I love them, applying blush from a little baggie is painful! I hope in the future Franchesca will put them in sample jars to make the application a bit easier.</span><br /><span id="fullpost"><br /></span><br /><span id="fullpost">Franchesca also sent me a sample of Heavenly rice powder in medium/dark tint which I used as a primer and finishing powder. It's lightweight and holds the foundation quite well. Since I'm looking for a silicon free primer, I will definitely order this product after I run out of my sample.</span><br /><span id="fullpost"><br /></span><br /><span id="fullpost">So what do I think of Adorned with Grace's products? To be honest with you, I'm not a neutral eyeshadow person anymore. However, her colors really change my opinion about neutrals: they are anything but boring!
